How To Choose The Right Paternity Test

July 22nd, 2008

The last decade has witnessed the most impressive advancements in genetic technology. The proposal of deciphering the complete sequence of the human genome some 16 years ago has unleashed an ?arms race? between public and private ventures with no precedent in life sciences. In an implacable battle to publish the first draft of the complete human genome, a multi-national, publicly funded consortium and a large biotech company owned by the billionaire Craig Venter spend billions in developing new technologies that allow rapid and accurate sequencing of DNA. This brought enormous benefits for biological and medical research, and allowed for better treatments and diagnostic tools.

Genetic testing is one of the fields that greatly benefited from these outcomes. As we know from famous TV series, today is possible to finger out a criminal by analyzing a single hair or a tiny drop of saliva. A more widespread application of this technology is that of paternity testing. A doubtful father can easily order a DNA testing kit, take a sample of himself and his child and send it out to a DNA testing facility. In a matter of days, he will receive a report confirming of ruling out his biological fatherhood on that child.

Although establishing paternity is the most frequent reason for having a DNA test done, there are many other applications. For example, it is also possible to determine other familiar relations such as brother/sisterhood, maternity, paternity when the alleged father is not available and so on. People can also have a detailed analysis about their ethnic and genealogical background. These kinds of tests are often made out of curiosity, but sometimes they can be very helpful. It is frequent that people are excluded from certain benefits that are intended for a specific ethnic group, such as Native Americans because they cannot demonstrate their ancestry. DNA testing is an effective and conclusive way to prove a person?s ethnic ancestry.

So far, everything looks fine. You need to have a DNA test done, so you do some research online. What you will find is an overwhelming spectrum of DNA labs offering paternity tests, and of course, each of them claims that they are ?the best lab?. What to do? Pick the first you come across? Pick the cheapest? You don?t need to be an expert to decide, but knowing the difference among all those labs will allow you to make a wiser decision. Why is this important? The kinds of questions you seek to answer through a DNA test are not trivial. A man who is not sure if he is the true father of his children cannot accept a ?maybe? as an answer, can he? Well, that is what he?ll get if he chooses a cheap DNA test from an inexperienced lab.

All DNA tests are essentially similar in their bare basics: they are all based on the same biological principles and use the same kind of analytical methods. There are, however, some differences you should take into account.

One important difference is the number of genetic markers they look at. Genetic markers are simply specific regions in the human genome that tend to be different among people. Imagine there is a region for which there are 5 different ?types? among humans. You are most likely to have the same type as your father at the same region. However, since there are only 5 different types in the population, your are also sharing the type with many other people that are not related to you, so that looking at this single region will not tell for sure who your father is. If we look at another region, the chances for sharing both of them with unrelated people are lower, but it is still possible. As the number of markers increase, the probability of a random match (sharing the same markers with an unrelated person) is lower. The best paternity tests use as much as 16 different markers. Having a match for all 16 markers by chance is virtually impossible, so a perfect match conclusively tells that the two persons are father and child. Why not using even more markers? Because there is no need to (with 16 markers, the probability of a false result is nil), and adding more markers to the analysis would only make the test more expensive. Why not less than 16? Many labs use between 4 and 8 markers to make the test cheaper. By choosing one of these you may save a few dollars, but your doubts will not be completely wiped out. Do you find this acceptable? Surely not.

The second most important source of false results of DNA testing is, paradoxically, one of its strengths. DNA tests are based on a technique called PCR (for Polymerase Chain Reaction). PCR was a revolutionary invention that warranted its creator a Nobel Prize. One of the most important features of PCR is its sensitivity: it is possible to analyzed minute amounts of DNA (in theory it can be done with a single cell). On one side, one can analyzed DNA from a single hair, a tiny spot of blood or even from the saliva obtained from a used cigarette, but the high sensitivity has a downside: it is very easy that such small samples become contaminated with DNA from other individuals, such as the police detective that gathered blood spots at the crime scene, the lab technician who processed the sampled and so on. Truly professional DNA labs follow strict guidelines and protocols to avoid contamination and have University-trained personnel. In this regard, if you send your DNA sample to an inexperienced or ill-equipped DNA lab, you risk a false result since somebody else?s DNA may be analyzed instead of yours due to improper manipulation or use of cheap or defective lab materials.

If you are thinking of having a DNA testing done, being for establishing paternity, genealogical inquiry, determination of Native American status or other reasons choose carefully. Avoid labs offering very low prices. Check thoroughly to have an idea about the price ranges out there. Only labs offering a multi-marker (ideally 16 for the standard paternity test) tests should be trusted. Avoid labs that, judging from their websites appear to be small or amateur. Consider that some companies are offering ?ready-to-use? DNA testing labs that can be used by anyone to offer cheap DNA testing. DNA testing should only be performed by qualified personnel and equipment.

There are some trusted resources from which you can obtain reliable recommendations about which DNA testing labs are offering the best service at good prices. Some preferred sources are GeneDNAtest.com (http://www.genednatest.com) and http://testingdna.blogspot.com. These websites will help you understand the basics about DNA testing, and also about ordering and using a DNA testing kit and know which options are right for you.

Do You Need A Maternity Nurse?

July 21st, 2008

If you’ve determined there’s enough money in your budget for a baby nurse (they don’t come cheap), you’ll need to consider several other factors before deciding whether or not to hire one. Here are some reasons why you might opt for the help:

    * To get some hands-on training in baby care. If you haven’t had experience or taken a parenting class and feel you’d rather not learn from the mistakes you make on the job and on your baby, a good baby nurse will be able to instruct in such basics as bathing, burping, changing nappies and even breastfeeding. If this is your reason for hiring a nurse, however, be sure that the person you hire is as interested in teaching as you are in learning. Some won’t tolerate novice parents peeping over their shoulders; one with such a dictatorial take-charge attitude can leave you as inexperienced and unsure when she departs as you were when she arrived.
    * To avoid getting up in the middle of the night for feedings. If you’re formula feeding and would rather sleep through the night, at least in the early weeks of postpartum fatigue, a baby nurse, on duty twenty-four hours a day or hired just for nights, can take over or share this feeding responsibility with you and your spouse.
    * To spend more time with an older child. Some parents hire a baby nurse so that they can be more available to their older children, and hopefully spare them the pangs of jealousy that are often provoked by new arrivals. Such a nurse might be hired to work just a few hours a day during the time you want to spend with your older child. If this is your major reason for hiring a nurse, however, keep in mind that her presence will probably serve only to postpone feelings of sibling jealousy.
    * To give yourself a chance to recuperate after a Caesarean or difficult vaginal birth. Since you probably won’t know if you’re going to have a difficult time before hand, it’s not a bad idea to do some scouting around for nurses in advance, just in case. If you have the name of a potential nurse or two, or at least have spoken to an agency, you can call shortly after you deliver and have a helper hired before you get home.

On the other hand, a baby nurse may not be the best solution to your postpartum needs if:

    * You’re breastfeeding. Since a nurse can’t feed a nursing newborn, and feeding is one of the most time-consuming tasks in the care of a young baby, she may not prove to be all that helpful. For the nursing mother, household help - someone to cook, clean and do laundry — is probably a wiser investment, unless you can find a nurse who will do these chores and also offer breastfeeding tips.
    * You’re not comfortable with a stranger living in your home. If the idea of having a non-family member sharing your bathroom, your kitchen and your table twenty-four hours a day makes you uneasy, hire a part-time nurse rather than a live-in, or opt for one of the other sources of help.
    * You’d rather do it yourself. If you want to be the one to give the first bath, catch sight of the first smile (even if they say it’s only gas), soothe your baby through the first bout of crying (even if it’s at 2 am), don’t hire a nurse, hire household help to free you up for fun with baby.
    * Dad would rather do it, too. If you and your spouse are planning to share baby care, a nurse may get in the way. There may also not be much left for her to do - except to collect her paycheque - especially if dad’s around full-time while he’s enjoying paternity leave. In that case, the money could probably be more sensibly spent on cleaning help.

If you decide that a baby nurse is right for you, the best way to go about finding one is to ask for recommendations from friends who’ve used one. Be sure to find out if the nurse in question has the qualifications and qualities you’re looking for. Some cook, some don’t. Some will do light housework and laundry, others won’t. Some are gentle, motherly women who will nurture your innate mothering ability and leave you feeling more confident; others are bossy cold and patronizing and will leave you feeling totally inadequate. Many are qualified nurses: some have also been trained specifically in caring for mother as well as baby, in mother-child relations, and in teaching breastfeeding and child-care basics. A personal interview is extremely important, since it’s the only way to know whether you are going to feel comfortable with a particular candidate. But excellent references ( do check them out) are a must. A nurse hired through an agency should be registered. It’s also very important that a nurse - or anyone else you hire who may come in contact with the baby - has been screened for TB. She should also be trained in CPR and child safety, as well as be up-to-date on baby-care practices (putting baby to sleep face up; keeping toys, pillows and blankets out of the cot. and so on)

5 Simple Tips To Healthier Eating

July 20th, 2008

It seems there’s always a new diet treatment hitting the market, or talk of a magic pill that will eliminate fat. Whether you choose to partake in any of these new treatments or not, it’s wise to remember the basics of healthy eating.

Just what is “healthy eating?” Is it only fruits and vegetables? Is it never eating sugar? It is eating only organic foods? Well, to some people, that is healthy eating. But, for the purposes of this article, when I refer to healthy eating I’m referring to balancing the food you eat to stay healthy. By keeping your diet balanced, you’ll find you are giving your body the vitamins and minerals it needs to stay strong. This in turn gives you energy and helps you maintain a healthy weight.

What are some basic tips for healthy eating?

1. Don’t skip any meals

That might sound odd to some people who believe you can only lose weight when you eat less. But, in fact, skipping meals is not healthy, and can actually keep you from maintaining your desired weight. Why? Well, one reason is that your metabolism increases when you eat. And, when the metabolism is increased, you burn more energy. Eating 3 meals with snacks in between is the ideal way to maintain both energy and a healthy weight. What’s that, you say, a snack in between? That’s right; a snack in between smaller meals is actually good for you. First, it can help you not feel so hungry at meals. And, when you don’t feel so hungry at meals, you tend not to eat as much. And, second, eating 5 smaller meals a day helps prevent the large spikes and drops in your blood sugar associated with fewer meals a day.

2. Chew slowly

This advice may seem a bit corny, but it makes sense. When you wolf down your food you aren’t giving your brain time to register when you?re full, which takes about 20 minutes. By the time you finally get the signal it’s too late and you’ve eaten far more than you needed to. Therefore, if you chew your food slowly it slows down your eating.

3. Learn how to prepare foods

Instead of deep frying, try grilling, stir frying, microwaving, baking, boiling and, in the case of vegetables - raw. And, if you really insist on using butter for cooking, try a butter substitute. I use a yogurt butter which is half the fat of regular butter, but tastes the same as real butter. If you use butter to add flavor to food, try something else for a change, like lemon, vinegar or dried herbs and spices. Before you eat any type of meat, be sure to trim it of fat and skin.

4. Avoid alot of sugar

If you can eliminate sugar, good for you, but, if you can’t, at least cut down. Drinks that contain sugar are a major source of empty calories. If you plan to drink sugary drinks, don’t go overboard - limit yourself to one a day.

5. Skip the diet foods

If you follow healthy eating guidelines, there’s really no need to buy prepared diet foods. A good number of these foods contain chemicals and additives that can be counterproductive to a healthy diet. A healthy portion of “real” food beats a heaping of prepared diet food any day, and doesn’t leave you feeling deprived.

Eating healthier doesn’t have to be difficult. The key is to be mindful of what and how you?re eating. Noticing is the first step in changing behavior.

New Mexico Child Support

July 19th, 2008

New Mexico Child Support
Child support payments occur only when parents are not living with each other. New Mexico Child support is regulated by the state and federal agencies across America. Each state in America has programs to help custodial and non-custodial parents pay, process, and collect past due, child support payments

New Mexico child support programs are administered through the child support enforcement department. As a custodial or non-custodial parent, it is important that you learn more information about the process of collecting and receiving New Mexico child support payments.

When a custodial parent wants to collect child support payments, they must first establish paternity of the child. When establishing paternity, the court orders will go out for the father to pay child support.

Once the father or mother is placed on child support and they refuse to pay, the New Mexico Child Support Enforcement Office will provide assistance in collecting payments. The New Mexico Child Support Enforcement Office has several methods in providing assistance in collecting child support payments. The well known method used to collecting child support payments is income withholding, where the child support payments are automatically withdrawn from the non-custodial parent’s paycheck. This method is used because it is considered the easiest and most convenient method for both parents.

Other methods are used such as having the non-custodial parent’s tax refund intercepted, driver’s or professional license revoked, and passport denial. There can even be liens placed on properties or bank accounts if the non-custodial parents refuses to pay child support.

Easy Way To Do Paternity Testing At Home

July 18th, 2008

Can paternity testing be carried out at home? Is there any cost implication? Here’s an article about the importance of paternity testing and how it will benefit a lot of children around the world.

The topic of paternity testing is somewhat a difficult topic to understand by most people. It is not a normal issue that you can talk with colleagues when having a drink together. However, when you have no other choice but to clarify the relationship between the actual father and the child, you better have a great understanding on this topic.

Presently, the dna testing for paternity is not that expensive like the good old days. Not all testing are cheap and easy to get. Some costs for this type of testing can range from reasonable to a large amount of cash in your pocket, but it all depend on what kind of testing and for what level of the scrutiny is. Also, costs for testing generally vary from lab to lab depending upon the size and type of the specimen to be tested. This type of testing does not require a substantial amount of blood sampling from the father in question or the child. For your information, there are three different companies that provide paternity testing; you can do a general search online to find the companies in your area. Companies offering the dna analysis must be trusted to perform the task by all the rules and regulations of the state they reside in for now.

The growth of adoption reunions are very common and definitely has its own disadvantages. When a child finds out the paternity test proves who they thought since a long time ago was not their true father, it can be very painful to them. This will ensure a sense of clarity and certainty for the man who feels the child is not of his offspring. There are many reasons for people to establish paternity; whatever the reason maybe just make sure you have the right person the first time. By comparing the genetic material of a child to that of any adults involved in the situation, there is a very good chance the parents can be found.

Did you know?

A simple dna home test can be a strong indicator of paternity of a man who can not afford the more expensive tests. Although most samples of dna collected for paternity tests are collected in a lab, it is possible to bring in a sample of dna for testing as well.?

A family can find out very quickly if there is a biological relationship between a child and a father with a paternity test. The most crucial thing about getting the results of the test is that; you will finally realize once and for all who the actual father of the child is. Although dna is as certain as ever for determining paternityFind Article, the people reading and analyzing the data can make errors. The most unreliable thing to do when taking a paternity testing at home is; getting a dna sample from the real father and telling someone else that they are the father.
